Laparoscopy Auckland is a surgeon-designed, purpose built laparoscopic surgical unit, which was opened March 2001 by the then Governor General, Dame Sylvia Cartwright. It is fitted with state of the art laparoscopic equipment and run as a short-stay surgical hospital, with facilities for overnight stay. Staff have been carefully selected by the two principal surgeons, Andrew Bowker and John Dunn. Andrew and John are recognised as being pioneers of laparoscopic surgery in New Zealand. Visiting surgeons include Adam Bartlett (Upper Gastrointestinal), Arend Merrie (Colorectal), Alison Hayes (Breast and Laparoscopic) and Stephanie Ulmer (Obesity Surgery). Andrew and Johns’ love of art, particularly New Zealand and Pacific rim art, is reflected in the extensive collection of original artworks which are on display in Laparoscopy Auckland. Laparoscopy Auckland is the only surgical unit in New Zealand which has laparoscopic surgery as its prime focus.
